Ancient Yarmouth & North Yarmouth Maine 1636-1936: A History

by: William Hutchinson Rowe
485 pp. 55 maps, charts, illus, portraits, early photos; index. 2000 (1937).

This attractive volume chronicles the settlement of the area around Casco Bay, including present-day Falmouth and Falmouth Foreside, Yarmouth, Cumberland, Harpswell and some of the bay islands, from the early 17th century down through the 20th century. Rowe was a skilled writer -- other books by him include the maritime History of Maine; Shipbuilding Days in Casco Bay; and Shipbuilding Days in Old North Yarmouth. Rich in insight, Rowe's accounts of the people who built these coastal towns, of the importance of the shipbuilding industry to the area and the state, and of the growth of commercial, educational, social, and ecclesiastical life in North Yarmouth and adjoining towns, combine to awaken in the reader a sense that this is history as it was lived.

It is an odd fact that Yarmouth grew richer as it grew smaller. By 1849, parts of six towns had been formed from the original settlement and yet Yarmouth still prospered due to the many mills and shipyards clustered around its sheltered harbor. The mansions of sea captains and merchants arose along its elm-shaded streets. When shipbuilding and other key industries declined, the town turned to its scenic islands and peninsulas to attract cottagers and other tourists to a leisurely world of clambakes and sailing parties.

Yarmouth Revisited

by: Amy Aldredge
The Yarmouth area has always had a strong maritime history with a legacy of shipbuilding and those who chose the seafaring life. On land, Yarmouth had a diverse industrial history with goods produced in mills located on the four falls of the Royal River. As the town expanded in the late-19th century, civic leaders recognized the need to modernize its infrastructure. A library and central grammar school were built, sewer lines were laid, and telephone service and electricity became available. The railroads allowed for goods to be shipped in and out of the town, and new trolley lines promoted tourism in the area.
